Elizabeth Mott You're So FINE Eyeliner in Glitterati

THE SKINNY: One look at the built-in brush for this eyeliner, and I expected the worst. This fine-point brush is not my friend, and I usually find it to be difficult to use and slightly painful during the experimentation stage.

But Elizabeth Mott's You're So FINE Eyeliner surprised me. The brush is a little softer than normal, and it's not as difficult to use.

The eyeliner goes on smoothly, albeit a little thick. Because it's a wet eyeliner that dries quickly, it's a little hard to blend or smudge with a makeup brush. But with some practice, I can get a decent line out of it.

I love the color, which is a glossy black with little flecks of silver glitter. It's not enough that you look like a teenager, but it is enough to be interesting.

This liner is waterproof and lasts all day.

Butter London WINK Eye Pencil

THE SKINNY: Butter London's WINK Eye Pencil is hands-down the best product I have tried in a long time. (And one of only ha handful that has earned 5 stars on this site.)

The smoky gray crayon-style eye liner glides on with ease. With primer it stays all day long. Despite any conditions. Even after sweating.

And it looks just applied up to 10 hours after application. What more could you want in a liner?

This liner comes in high colors and has a hint of shimmer. The pencil creates an almost perfect line every time without a sharpener. Plus, it is waterproof and will not smudge. (I dare you to try!)

I am using the smoky gray as a thick eye liner base with a neutral shadow these days and it makes a perfect day look.

Younique Moodstruck Precision Pencil Eye Liner

THE SKINNY: I am an eye liner junkie. It is probably the one beauty product I can't live without. The number of pencils and gels on my counter-top is borderline embarrassing.

So when I saw the Younique Moodstruck Precision Pencil Eye Liner, I bought three more. And I was not disappointed.

These pencils have great color that glides on so smoothly. The color is exactly as it looks on the bottoms of each pencil and stays ALL DAY LONG with a primer.

I absolutely love the green-blue (Presumptuous). The liners help me get my go-to look -- a pop of liner for color and neutral shadow. This is one of the best liners (and even items) I have ever tried.

Pacifica Natural Water-Proof Eye Pencil

THE SKINNY: I wouldn't call Pacifica's Natural Water-Proof Eye Pencil "waterproof." This creamy eyeliner (my sample from Ipsy was a standard brown called "fringe") rubbed off with one swipe of my finger. Even when I was careful, the color didn't stay put for more than an hour.

It would have been an OK everyday liner if it hadn't been touted as waterproof. But for $11 I expect a lot more.

KEEP OR TOSS: Toss. I love Pacifica's body lotions and scents. But so far the makeup line has been disappointing.

Lord & Berry Silk Kajal Kohl Eye Pencil

THE SKINNY: Lord & Berry's Silk Kajal Kohl Eye Pencil is an OK black eye pencil that came in a recent Ipsy bag.

It's "dark black" and goes on smoothly. It lasts a few hours.

It doesn't inspire me to write much more.

The reality is that I have half a dozen other black eyeliners that are better. Start with Urban Decay's 24/7 Velvet Glide-On Eye Pencil.

Benefit They're Real Push-Up Eye Liner

THE SKINNY: It made me cringe to spend $24 on an eye liner. But Benefit's They're Real Push-Up Eye Liner isn't just any liner. This gel liquid is the real deal.

It goes on easy -- you do need a steady hand -- and makes eyes look big and bold. It feels like mascara ... in a liner.

It goes on unlike any other eyeliner I have ever tried. The applicator has a flexible rubber tip and the product comes up through it. One click will go all the way across you lids.

This stuff lasts all day and looks like it just went on. It dries exceptionally fast (so you don't end up with smudges) and is waterproof. If you want to try some of the funkier eye liner styles of there (exaggerated cat eyes or just high drama), this is a great solution.

The only downside is that it only comes in black.

Nicka K New York Shimmer Eyeliner

THE SKINNY: I wasn't an immediate fan of Nicka K New York's Shimmer Eyeliner until I saw the price. Then my attitude softened a little bit. I wouldn't be willing to pay more than $5 for this eyeliner, but at that price point it's a way to play around with a fun pop of color on my eyelids.

This eyeliner does add a good pop of color. I got a sample in a recent Ipsy bag in green, which is a really bright green with teal undertones. (I saw little "sparkle," which is fine with me.)

The eyeliner goes on heavy but blends surprisingly easily. I thought the color would dry quickly and I'd be left with a Sharpie-quality line along my lashes. Not the case. The liner blended in with a few flicks of a brush.

The liner brush leaves a lot to be desired. It's super thin and the tip of it is sharp. I had to apply the liner by holding the side of the brush against my eyelid, which was awkward. (This caused my initial dislike of the product, but read on.)

Thank goodness the product blended so easily.

The liner lost some of its vibrancy throughout the day but otherwise stayed in place. In fact, at the end of a long day, the eyeliner, although much faded, was the last bit of my eye makeup visible. That's great for a $5 product, bad brush or not.


KEEP OR TOSS: Keep. I don't have a true green eyeliner, so this will be a fun option.

Urban Decay 24/7 Velvet Glide-On Eye Pencil

THE SKINNY: If you love Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils, you'll be happy with the latest incarnation: Velvet.

This is a matte black liner that goes on looking slightly smudged (but still stays in place all day). This pencil blends into a smokey eye makeup without a lot of work. My favorite part is it's easy to apply without worrying about the line being perfectly straight.

The color is pretty and warm, a nice contrast to the inky black of the regular Glide-On Eye Pencil. And it really does look velvety.

Chella Eyeliner Pen

THE SKINNY: Chella's Eyeliner Pen delivers a precise, thin line, like a precision point marker. It's fairly easy to use, even for my wobbly hand. (Just don't poke yourself in the eye with the tip. That hurts.)

This eyeliner dries quickly and is waterproof, so it stays in place all day without fading. Unfortunately, this eyeliner dries quickly, so if you want to smudge the line so it looks more natural, you have to be ready to act.

After a few weeks of use, the pen is still going strong and the tip, which really does look like a felt-tip marker, hasn't dried out or gotten icky.

It's a pretty color of blue, too, especially as spring rolls in.

Sephora Waterproof Smoky Cream Liner

COST: $12 (bought for $5 on a sale table in store)

THE SKINNY: This may be one of the best products I’ve ever found on a sale table at Sephora. This pot of cream eyeliner in a color called Cafe is a warm and golden brown that stays in place all day long. It’s been a few months, and the product is still creamy and glides onto my eyes.

Just dip an angled eyeliner brush into the pot of goodness and apply it as thin or as thick as you like. It blends easily for the first few minutes, then locks in place.

It comes off easily with face soap and water, too.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep. It’s a great color that lasts.

Urban Decay Naked 24/7 Doubled Ended Eye Pencil

THE SKINNY: Urban Decay makes some of the best eye pencils around. They go on creamy, blend easily and stay in place for hours. The new addition to the line is the Naked 24/7 Doubled Ended Eye Pencil (which I honestly only bought to hit the free shipping price point).

Venus + Crave is a shimmery white paired with a matte black-brown, and it's my new favorite.

The addition of Crave, the highlighter, is fabulous. This pencil brightens my eyes, something I really need now that we're in the for-real part of winter. This really brightens tired eyes, and it's a nice pop for going out.

Plus the white will blend with whatever other color you're wearing so you can make the lines look less heavy if needed.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep. I use it almost daily.

BareMinerals Lasting Line Eye Liner

THE SKINNY: I am a total sucker for a great navy eyeliner. So I was totally stoked to see the new BareMinerals Lasting Line Eye Liner in NONSTOP NAVY.

It is my new absolute favorite.

This liner crayon is super smooth and just glides over lids. The color is perfect and tops any other blue I have found recently.

And it lasts all day. And that's pretty much what seals the deal.

Plus the new liner includes a smudge tool on one end to create the perfect smoky eye look. BareMinerals did a great job with this take on some of their classic eyeliners. And at $16, the price is comparable to similar premium brands.

Vincent Longo Duo Eye Pencil

THE SKINNY: I can't decide if it was this eye pencil or just eye pencils in general, but this product was a total dud.

The Lime Forest combo was an exciting concept when I opened my Glossybox ... two shades that I could get a lot of use from.

But I will never know. The pencil was super sharp and hurt terribly when I tried to apply the eye liner. And then the color would not transfer to my lids.

I worked at it about five minutes -- until almost teary-eyed -- and then gave up and threw the pencil away. Ugh.

Starlooks Gem Eye Pencil in Deja Vu

THE SKINNY: Starlooks' Kohl Eye Pencil didn't get high marks from us. But this Gem Eye Pencil more than makes up for it.

This is a bright silver metallic eye pencil that's just plain fun. It's softer than the Kohl Eye Pencil and goes on a little easier. Plus the almost-glittery finish works great to brighten my eyes. It's also good for taking a day look to an evening out.

Ulta Automatic Eye Liner

RATING (out of 5 stars): 3.5 stars

COST: $8

THE SKINNY: I am always on the search for the perfect purple eye liner. It really is my makeup staple.

Surprisingly, Ulta's Automatic Eye Liner fit the bill pretty well. Black Plum is a dark, deep purple that goes perfectly with my greenish eyes. It's super inexpensive at $8 (and Ulta frequently offers this product at a discount or buy one, get one free), and had staying power.

A win all around.

The liner went on easy and is waterproof. (It did slide off very easily with a makeup removing cloth so I am not sure I would test it in the pool.)

The pencil is touch enough that it does not break and smooth enough to go on with ease. I am also a sucker for eye liners that don't need to be sharpened.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep.

L’oreal Voluminous Smoldering Liner

COST: $8.95

THE SKINNY: When it comes to eyeliners, you get what you pay for. L’oreal says this eyeliner will take from from “everyday to exotic,” but my experience with it has just been ho-hum.

This liner is a little drier than the creamy-but-tough products from brands such as Urban Decay, Clinique and Smashbox. Because of that, it’s harder to blend and doesn’t stay in place as long as the others.

L’oreal does give you a sharpener when you buy this liner. But I’d rather pay more for a product that it going to wow me.

KEEP OR TOSS: Toss. It just doesn’t measure up to my go-to eyeliners from higher-end brands.

Be a Bombshell Eyeliner

THE SKINNY: Although I had never heard of the Be a Bombshell line before, I am super-happy about this find in a recent Glossybox.

This eyeliner (I used Onyx) is unlike any other I have tried. The fat crayon-shaped liner acts like a liquid but goes on smooth like a pencil.

The felt tips makes application easy and the liner stays put all day long. The best part is that this liner really is a liquid but there is no drying time. (This eyeliner was almost worth the price of the Glossybox alone.)

I hope this brand gets in some of the stores I frequent soon, such as Sephora or Ulta. The company is pretty new and seems to be mostly an online venture.

Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liqiud Eyeliner

THE SKINNY: If you need an eyeliner to last all day and all night, Urban Decay's 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner is for you.

It almost lasts too well. I had a hard time getting it all off nearly 24 hours after application.

What's nice about this liner is the color. It comes in 11 colors -- actual colors, not just black and brown. (I bought Retrograde, a dark blue and love it.) Each color looks like the package with hues that range from bright to more common.

I especially love the color options because I am seriously digging a colored liner and neutral eyeshadow these days.

Application is easy and less messy than some other liquid liners because the applicator is a super-skinny brush.

While this won't become my every day liner, it will be part of my special occasion rotation.

Starlooks Kohl Eye Pencil

THE SKINNY: Starlooks Kohl Eye Pencil is supposed to be an "intensely pigmented" pencil.

Maybe it's because my shade -- obsidian -- is a matte color, but this pencil is just ho-hum. It's not very intense at all.

It's fairly easy to apply and has a good "pencil" texture. It's not creamy and stays put after you apply it. The color lasts about half a day before it begins to wear off.

Given all that, $12 seems a little expensive for what you get.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep, but it will probably find its way to the bottom of the eye product drawer.

Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon

COST: $25

THE SKINNY: Yes, $25 is a lot to pay for an eyeliner. But Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon is worth the extra money.

I traded in some Sephora points to nab a sample in black, and it's by far the richest and prettiest black I have in my makeup drawer. This eyeliner goes on smooth and is easy to blend.

Topped with a little bit of shadow, it stayed in place all day, then rinsed clean with my usual face cleanser.

The black is vivid, a lot darker and richer than my usual Urban Decay and Smashbox blacks.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep. It's gorgeous. Really.

CHECK IT OUT: Highliner Gel Crayon comes in six colors. I'd love to try N(ice), a light silver with shimmer.
