Shiseido Urban Environment Oil–Free UV Protector

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4 stars

COST: $30 for 1 ounce

THE SKINNY: Shiseido's Urban Environment Oil–Free UV Protector was a big surprise for me.

It's a thin, runny liquid that can be a little hard to coat the skin, especially if you don't have a big enough puddle in the palm of your hand. (Yes, this comes out quite watery, which is usually something I cannot stand.)

But once on my skin, I was really impressed with the results. This is a light protector that packs a real punch. It's SPF 42. It's great for the hot days of summer because it's not heavy or sticky. And it blocks UV rays and general environmental skin damage.

Though it's not technically a moisturizer, this protector left my skin feeling silky smooth. It's not irritating to my skin or eyes.

Overall, I'm really happy with this product. I can see myself using it all summer.

KEEP OR TOSS: Definitely keep.

Miss Dior Eau de Parfum

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4 stars

COST: $80 for 3.4 ounces

THE SKINNY: It's the hint of patchouli that wins me over in this perfume from Dior. (It's definitely not Natalie Portman's job as the face of Dior.)

This is an interesting yet light scent that starts with a powdery scent and finishes warm and rich.

It blends all my favorite scents -- orange, sandalwood and, yes, patchouli (which always reminds me of good times and good friends from my college days).

This is a scent I could wear to work or for an evening out.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep. I was surprised by how much I liked this scent.

CHECK IT OUT: This is an expensive perfume on the Dior site ($102), but shop around. It's only $80 at Sephora, Macy's and other merchants.

Dr. Jart+ Gold Label Premium BB Cream

RATING (out of 5 stars): 2 stars

COST: $49 for 50 ml

THE SKINNY: Dr. Jart+'s Gold Label Premium BB Cream is just a weird color. It's a pale gold, which gave my fair skin too much of a cool hue.

When the tint is off, no facial cream in the world is going to help.

The gold tint is supposed to "whiten" your face to improve dark spots and blemishes. I actually think it made the lines in my face stand out more.

On a good note, this cream is SPF 45, which really is good for your skin!

KEEP OR TOSS: Toss. No facial cream should leave your skin a strange color.

CHECK IT OUT: Learn more about this product, and others from Dr. Jart+ (a brand I'd never heard of until this sample arrived) online.

L'Occitane Divine Cream

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4 stars

COST: $98 for 1.7 ounces

THE SKINNY: This is among the best moisturizers I've ever put on my face.

Divine Cream is a thick, anti-aging day cream that left my skin immediately feeling smooth and silky. Enriched with plant oils with high levels of omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, this is an anti-wrinkle cream that delivers.

Days later, my face still felt soft.

The cream is a little on the thick side, which makes me wonder if I'd want to use it in the hottest part of summer. It also has a slight perfume scent, although not enough to be bothersome or make my eyes water.

It's expensive. So expensive that I doubt (sadly) I'll ever purchase it. But boy is it nice.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep.

Philosophy Purity Made Simple Cleanser

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4.5 stars

COST: $20 for 8 ounces ($10 for 3 ounces)

THE SKINNY: Philosophy Purity Made Simple might just be one of my new favorite products. I finally see what all the fuss is about after trying products from this brand and not liking them.

This facial cleanser went on smooth (you only need a dab) and made my skin feel fantastically clean.

It is great for my sensitive skin because it is fragrance free and does not contain mineral oil (which can be irritating for some). And it felt like it really cleaned my skin -- something other light cleansers just don't seem to accomplish.

Purity Made Simple also seemed to add a little extra moisture to my daily skin care routine. The occasional skin flakiness was all but gone.

The formula is also tough enough to remove makeup at the end of the day as well. I am seriously considering making this my new full-time cleaning product.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep. Even with the high price tag, this would be worth it. You only use a tiny amount each time so it will surely last.

CHECK IT OUT: Purity Made Simple gets great reviews on the Philosophy website and at Sephora. You don't just have to take my word for it (although you really could!).

Yu-Be Moisturizing Body Lotion

RATING (out of 5 stars): 2.5 stars

COST: $29 for 10.25 ounces

THE SKINNY: Yu-Be Moisturizing Body Lotion claims to be the same as the top-selling body lotion in Japan. My guess is that the scent must be different.

The bright yellow lotion smelled like Vicks Vapor Rub going on. And the smell lasted because I kept catching whiffs of it throughout the day. My boyfriend even asked me if I had a cold at one point because he caught wind of the medicinal aroma. (Embarrassing!)

The lotion is made with glycerin and camphor (which explains the smell).

On the plus side, Yu-Be is very hydrating.

I just can't get over the odd yellow color. And the smell. It was just too much.

But Yu-Be also claims to cool a sunburn. I might have to give it another chance this summer and see how that works.

KEEP OR TOSS: Toss. Who wants to smell like they are sick, no matter how good skin looks afterward?

David Yurman Summer Essence

RATING (out of 5 stars): 2.5 stars

COST: $85 for 100ml

THE SKINNY: Summer Essence is a limited edition scent from David Yurman. From the name, you'd guess it will only be available this summer.

This is a definite floral scent that reminds me of flowers and that scented powder I used to play with as a kid while visiting relatives. According to the perfume description, it contains notes of pear, peach and apple blossoms, a little hyacinth and a little orchid. (Then a whole mess of stuff after that.)

The scent is very flowery, although has sharper notes than some of those sticky sweet perfumes.

KEEP OR TOSS: Toss: This just isn't a scent for me. It's much too flowery.

CHECK IT OUT: Find the list of every scent they combined to create this fragrance online.

MicrodermaMitt

RATING (out of 5 stars): 1 star

COST: $28.50 for one

THE SKINNY: This is one of the strangest products I've tried in a long time. Although it looks like a small burlap sack, it's actually an all-natural silk mitt to exfoliate dead skin cells and dirt.

You're supposed to use a damp mitt on damp skin. Rub gently to remove dead skin cells.

I used the mitt once on my face, and it was much too rough. It felt more like sandpaper than an exfoliator. I tried it for about a week on my arms and legs. It still felt rough and it didn't seem to do anything. I get much better results from an exfoliating poof and liquid bath soap.

Plus, the mitt is just awkward to use. It's not hand-shaped. It's a little big and bulky for its purpose. And it needs to drip dry somewhere.

KEEP OR TOSS: Toss. While I'm sure this may work fabulously for some people, it's too rough for my liking, especially to use on my face.

CHECK IT OUT: Watch a video about the product with instructions on how to use it.

Smashbox Limitless 15 Hour Wear Cream Shadow

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4 stars

COST: $19

THE SKINNY: This cream shadow is no joke. It glides on totally silky-smooth and then stays put. All day and well into the evening.

Smashbox Limitless 15 Hour Wear Cream Shadow, which has not been on the market long, comes in 12 shades and even holds up in wet and humid conditions. They only thing that foiled this product was rubbing my eyes when a case of allergy eyes set it. (but even then, I just got a dab of color on my hand and still had color where it should be.)

I tested "Amethyst" and the color went on a bit heavier than I expected from the little pot. (And for $19 you get an insane amount of shadow; at half the size, you would still never use it all.)

The only downside is that the shadow does not come with any type of applicator and you really need one. Natural bristle brushes (which I swear by) don't really work here. I had to dig out a brush with a foam tip.

Cream shadow is a great option if you are looking for all-day color. But for neutrals and pastels the creamy formula may be a little too heavy and a powder shadow may be a better choice.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep, for sure. This is one of my new favorite products for all-day color.

CHECK IT OUT: Look at all the colors available and but direct from Smashbox. I am also a member of the Pretty Points program, which offers tons of freebies. (Also shop on Tuesdays for even more special deals.)

Beauty Box No. 3: May Total Beauty Collection box

The May box was the first for Total Beauty Collection and I will call the results mixed -- at least until I try all the products.

The box was packaged nicely and came pretty fast. It was $15 and promised four to six deluxe beauty samples.

Inside were three beauty products that I have yet to try -- June Jacobs Spa Collection Green Tea and Cucumber Body Balm, Blinc Mascara and Alterna Bamboo Luminous Shine Mist. I am totally unfamiliar with the June Jacobs line. The mascara is in a cool little tin can and I have tried and liked Alterna products in the past. Once I try them, all the reviews will be posted here.

It was a little disappointing though, that my four to six samples, included only three samples and a $15 gift card to Pevonia (another company I had not heard of but found out sells natural skin care products). But I suppose if I use the gift card, I have broken even on the price of the box.

Although Total Beauty has a pretty expansive blogger network and there was a lot of hype surrounding the release of this box, the company did not offer incentives for signing up. No bonuses for referrals or discount codes, things that the other boxes offer.

Overall, though a little disappointed, I am very much looking forward to trying the new products.

Did you order the box? What did you think?

This is our third beauty box. Check out reviews of Birchbox and Julep Maven.

L'Oreal 24-hour Infallible Eyeshadow

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4.5 stars

COST: $5.50-8 online and in drugstores

THE SKINNY: I did something I try to never do in the name of this review. I slept with my eye makeup on. And I woke up and it was still there. So we can truly say L'Oreal 24-hour Infallible Eyeshadow lives up to its name.

This is by far the best drugstore eyeshadow I have ever used. The cream formula goes on almost like a powder but it has the super-saturated color of a cream. There is no mess or drying time after application and the color really does last all day, all night and into the morning. (I have to say I was shocked at the results.)

And this stuff is cheap. And it comes in 12 shades. And you can get it almost anywhere.

Did I mention that I am excited by this product?

I tried "Golden Sage," a great green shade the goes perfectly with my hazel eyes. I got several compliments on the first day I tried it and am now planning to run back to the grocery store for "Sultry Smoke."

I do wish this shadow came with a small brush. Because with these creamy shadows you really need a dedicated brush or you end up with a mess. But for $6.50 (what I actually paid), I should not complain.

The container is also a little odd. The top is actually the bottom and once you open it there is a plastic insert that says "do not throw away."

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep! Buy more shades.

CHECK IT OUT: Find out more about the Infallible line and find out where to buy it near you.

Garnier Ultra-Lift 2-in-1 Wrinkle Reducer Serum + Moisturizer

RATING (out of 5 stars): 3 stars

COST: $16.99

THE SKINNY: Garnier's Ultra-Lift moisturizer and serum combo sure left my skin feeling smooth and silky. And the price is decent, too.

This combo actually is two products pumped into the container together -- white moisturizer and a clear serum. Squirt a little onto your fingers, rub together and apply. The moisturizer softens skin while the serum fights wrinkles.

The lotion has no smell and isn't sticky or icky. It's a creamy lotion that glides onto the skin and soaks in quickly. It's not watery and not overly thick.

What it lacks, however, is some kind of sun protection. So you will still end up using two products -- Garnier plus a sunscreen -- on your face.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep. But I'd rather use a moisturizer with a decent SPF and a separate serum.

CHECK IT OUT: This is just one of several products in Garnier's Ultra-Lift line.

Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4 stars

COST: $22.50

THE SKINNY: Let's be honest. The Sugar Lip Treatment made by fresh may be fabulous, but I will never buy this product because of the price. For the $22.50 plus tax charged for one tube, I could buy nearly 10 tubes of Carmex, ChapStick or whatever other brand catches your eye.

That being said, I do love this lip treatment. It's nice and thick and smooth, much like an upscale Carmex. It has a slight lemon scent and even slighter lemony taste.

And it lasts a decent amount of time -- not the six hours the advertising promises -- but it left my lips feeling comfortable for an hour or two.

Sugar Lip Treatment uses sugar to preserve moisture, as well as nourishing oils and polyphenols. Plus the SPF 15 addition is a nice bonus.

Now if fresh could just do something about the price.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep the sample, because you know you're not spending that much on it.

CHECK IT OUT: Find a complete list of ingredients online.

Wei Black Soy Instant Lifting Face Treatment Pad

RATING (out of 5 stars): 3.5 stars

COST: $68 for six

THE SKINNY: This is a single-use face mask for firming and tightening the skin. It's just kind of weird.

The mask is a liquid-soaked piece of gauze cut into the shape of a face. It's messy, and it's hard to open the mask without feeling like you are going to rip the thing to shred.

Once on, it's very wet. You leave the mask stuck to your face for 10 minutes. Mine dripped a bit.

Then peel off the mask, wipe away excess liquid with damp cloth and follow with moisturizer.

It felt kind of icky the first few minutes and very cold -- not something I would do on a cold winter's night. But as the liquid soaked in, my skin felt cool and refreshing, like putting cucumber slices over my eyes.

Afterward, my face felt tight and renewed, then a little hot for a few minutes.

The next day, it my skin looked good and felt renewed.

KEEP OR TOSS: I only had one mask, which is used. As much as I dislike trying to scrub all the clay or mud mask off my face, I'm not sure I'd pay $68 for six.

CHECK IT OUT: This product isn't widely available and came to me through Birchbox. Wei offers a similar product -- $38.50 for 60 pads -- on its website.

tarte Amazonian Clay Bronzer

RATING (out of 5 stars): 2 stars

COST: $29

THE SKINNY: I keep using this bronzer and not really seeing anything change after the brush sweeps across my cheeks. So I'm really not sure why I'm using it.

This bronzer in the Park Avenue Princess (it's a gold tone) doesn't do much for my fair skin. I've had better luck and color from the Sephora Collection bronzer, which is half the cost.

The good? This is a mineral bronzer that's talc-free and claims to allow the skin to breathe.

Maybe I need to try the other color, Hotel Heiress, which is more bronze in color.

KEEP OR TOSS: Toss. I'm not a fan of using makeup that I can't see.

CHECK IT OUT: Learn more about the Amazonian line from tarte and look for sales online.

EOS Organic Lip Balm

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4 stars

COST: $3.29

THE SKINNY: It may sound crazy but I LOVE the shape of the EOS Organic Lip Balm egg. The round shape makes it so easy to find in the bottom of my bag.

The product is pretty nice too. EOS says their balms are 100 percent natural and 95 percent organic and contain no parabens or petroleum. What entices me more is that the balm is packed with feel-good ingredients such as Vitamin E, shea butter and jojoba oil.

The result? A creamy balm that makes lips feel pretty good.

The downside? This balm has no color and is is not a replacement or alternative to your glosses or lipstick in a pinch. (But that is not what this product claims to be either.) It also feels a little funny the first few times you use the spherical-shaped applicator.

I tried "Summer Fruit," one of six flavors, but honestly I did not notice that much of a scent or flavor (which is OK with me).

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep. This is an inexpensive product that gets results.

CHECK IT OUT: Read more about EOS Organic Lip Balm and check out the other flavors. You can also buy direct or pick it up at your favorite drugstore or grocery store.

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4 stars

COST: $39 for 1 ounce

THE SKINNY: Using this product for the first time was a true experiment. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream has the color of a liquid foundation but goes on like a lotion. I first tried medium only to realize that I am not medium at all. I looked like a freakishly tanned mannequin after application. So I washed it off.

Take 2 was mixing the BB Cream with my moisturizer to tone down the color. That worked great. I got the look and feel of a tinted moisturizer with the benefit of SPF 35. It felt great on my skin and hid imperfections. (I also use quite a bit less of the BB Cream after re-reading the package.)

Take 3: I tried the product in light (somehow I had two samples in two different shades, thank goodness!). It worked as advertised. Very nice coverage that you can use alone (this would be great for summer) or under foundation (great for photos -- I will be using this at my sister's wedding for sure).

The key to this product is to use a very small amount. Resist the urge to slather it on. You will look like a super-tanned zombie if you use more than a dab. Proper application results in a great, natural look.

Plus the BB Cream has the added benefit of SPF 35 (a girl's best friend) and Smashbox claims the product will help improve your skin over time with anti-aging peptides that help smooth out those little lines.

KEEP OR TOSS: BB creams are all the rage right now. This is one to try. I plan to keep some handy for those days when I really need to look my best.

CHECK IT OUT: Find out more about Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream and order from the company. Smashbox also post other reviews and professional application tips. Also make sure to sign up for the Pretty Points program!

Tarina Tarantino Sparklicity Gloss

RATING (out of 5 stars): 3.5 stars

COST: $14

THE SKINNY: If you like sparkles, Tarina Tarantino Sparklicity Gloss is the product for you. (I liked the color I tried, "Paiette," way more than I should.)

This super-glittery, super-shiny, super-girly lip gloss goes on easy and leaves your lips looking full and super glam. But it might be a shade over the glitter threshold for an adult.

Regardless, this is a fun product and could easily be saved for a night at the club. Just don't break it out for a day at the office. There were a few leftover sparkles on my lips after much of the gloss had worn off.

This product also made my lips feel great. Several hours after application, my lips felt as if I had put on a creamy balm rather than gloss. How can you go wrong with that?

I was though a little turned off by the oddly citrus scent. I think mostly because I expected it to have a flavor to match but did not.

KEEP OR TOSS: This product is just too much fun. Keep!

CHECK IT OUT: You can check out all the other shades of Tarina Tarantino Sparklicity Gloss available, read other reviews (it gets even better ratings from other users) and buy from Sephora.

Ultraflesh The Gold Standard Mascara

RATING (out of 5 stars): 2.5 stars

COST: $36 for due set

THE SKINNY: This is the most cryptically marketed product I have ever tried. The sample came in Sephora's Glitz and Glam box (which was totally awesome) but there is very little about Ultraflesh The Gold Standard Mascara or even the brand in general available.

The product though is pretty nice, although it does not last all day.

The mascara (I tested "Blackout") goes on smooth and gives your lashes great separation and length, thanks to a great little brush.

It just did not make it all day and I had to reapply. But there was no flakiness.

KEEP OR TOSS: I'll use the remainder of the sample, but due to a lack of availability I am pretty sure this is it for me. Is the Ultraflesh brand available in stores near you? Share in the comments.

Marc Jacobs Daisy

RATING (out of 5 stars): 3.5 stars

COST: $20 for a rollerball or $62 for 1.7 ounces

THE SKINNY: Marc Jacobs makes quirky cool clothes. It's only fitting that he make a quirky cool fragrance, too.

Daisy is just that fragrance. Oddly, I never liked it much when I tested it at Sephora. But a sample came in the mail the other day, so I gave it another try. This fragrance is really about what happens an hour after you put it on.

The daisy is my favorite flower, but I never much cared for the scent. It's a little too, well, plant-y for me. Marc Jacob's daisy has more of a violet scent than a true daisy. But, in the store at least, it too smelled a little too plant-y and a little too vintage for my liking.

But I discovered I love this scent about an hour after it absorbs into my skin. Those abrasive notes soften to a mellow, feminine note that I really enjoy. And it's such a subtle scent.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep.

CHECK IT OUT: This scent is also available in a full line of body products, including butter and lotion. Discover them at Marc Jacob's site.

Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4 stars

COST: $8.99

THE SKINNY: I have always been a fan of Neutrogena products and have used them since I was a pre-teen off and on.

Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm is one of my new favorites. It has the super-moisturizing feel of your favorite balm plus a nice touch of color. I have been using "Petal Glow" and the tint is perfect -- a light color with a hint of shimmer. It is the perfect balm for to use in between your favorite gloss or lipstick.

As an added bonus, this balm is supposed to help support the overall look of your lips and help them look rosier. I can't really attest to this; maybe the change is just to gradual.

Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm comes in six shades and contains SPF 20. (You can never have enough sun protection.)

Smashbox Photo Finish Luminizing Foundation Primer

RATING (out of 5 stars): 4.5 stars

COST: $38

THE SKINNY: I really liked Smashbox's regular primer. And I have to admit I was a little skeptical about the "luminizing" option.

Rub a little of this primer into your palms, and it looks like a bad self-tanner mixed with glitter.

But rub it onto your face, and all the badness goes away. It literally made my skin glow with a natural and radiant warmth, like I got a perfect amount of sun the day before.

It is pretty amazing stuff. Much like the regular version, this primer is light and not greasy. It feels smooth against my skin, and it does help my makeup last throughout the day. Plus, it comes off easily at night without a lot of scrubbing.

KEEP OR TOSS: Keep. I'm definitely planning to buy more.

Harvey Prince's Yogini

RATING (out of 5 stars): 2.5 stars

COST: $26 for 8.8 ml

THE SKINNY: Described as a calming scent featuring sandalwood, myrrh and grapefruit, Yogini is a fragrance I found kind of unremarkable. I didn't love it. But I didn't dislike it, either.

This perfume reminds me of powder with a slight hint of my grandmother. It's really not something I would wear.

Jane Iredale Tantasia

RATING (out of 5 stars): 2 stars

COST: $36

THE SKINNY: OK, I admit that I have gone a little crazy with the self-tanners recently. But my pale skin needs help before I break out the capris.

Jane Iredale Tantasia provided some of that relief. But I am a little torn on how I feel about it.

The self tanner had none of the gross self-tanner smell. (This is the fist one I have tried that did not have any odor at all.) But ... it was an odd-brownish orange color right out of the tube. I could actually see it coloring my skin.

Or so I thought. Despite the dark-colored cream I did not notice much of a tanning effect. Correction: My hands bronzed immediately but I was able to wash it off with soap.

Honestly, this tanner just freaked me out a bit with the odd coloring and the wash-away effect. But I really do love that it does not have self-tanner stink.

KEEP OR TOSS: Toss. I won't be coming back to this one.

CHECK IT OUT: You can try it for yourself, but know that Jane Iredale Tantasia is an expensive product that does not seem to be widely available.
